MECC provides a number of support services for students. Students are encouraged to take advantage of our academic, career, and other related support services to be successful. The Student Services Office, which provides career, transfer, disability, testing and advising support, is located in Holton Hall and can be reached at 276.523.2400 ext. 472. The Center for Student Outreach and Success, which provides student IDs, advising, and success coaching, is located in Holton Hall and can be reached at 276.523.2400 ext. 288.

Services Provided:

Advising

The mission of Academic Advising is to partner with students to help them define, plan and progress towards their educational goals by fostering independence, facilitating a professional, supportive environment and promoting student development skills. In general, all academic advisors assist students in selecting proper courses as related to their declared program, interpreting curriculum requirements and assessing academic progress. Academic advisors are familiar with the college and with the programs for which they advise. They can either answer questions directly, or direct students to the appropriate campus resource.

Specifically, your academic advisor can help you by providing:

  • Academic planning assistance and guidance for course selection for upcoming semesters.
  • Advice and planning during times of academic difficulty.
  • Referrals to college or community resources.

You should visit with an academic advisor when you:

  • Are a new student or a student returning after an absence of several years.
  • Need placement test results interpreted.
  • Want to talk about courses, review your academic plan, or discuss graduation requirements.
  • Need to discuss courses for the upcoming semester.

Visit either the Office of Student Services or Office of Outreach & Success when you:

  • Are non-degree seeking and want to discuss courses for the upcoming semester.
  • Are having academic difficulties.
  • Need help locating someone to talk to about community resources.
  • Have questions about changing or adding additional programs.
  • Have questions about transferring.

Career Services

Career Services offers computerized career assessments and career planning to help students determine career goals and thus a college major. Students can receive assistance with employment preparation including workshops and seminars on resume development, resume critiques, interview and business etiquette, mock interviews, tips on job search strategies, job market projections, and labor market trends. Career Services offers job fairs and communicates local job announcements on student email. For additional details on services available, visit www.mecc.edu/career-services. Center for Student Outreach and Success

The Center for Student Outreach and Success is designed to assist new students with the enrollment process, enable coordinated outreach to students at the middle and secondary school levels, and create a central location for student success and retention efforts. Disability Services

Mountain Empire Community College provides services to students with documented disabilities. For more information, visit the Disability Services web page or contact the Disability Services Coordinator located in the Student Services Office in Holton Hall, at 276.523.2400 ext. 343.

Fitness Center

MECC offers a Fitness Center for students which includes free weights and cardio machines. The Fitness Center is located on the first floor of Godwin Hall and is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Great Expectations

MECC’s Great Expectations program is a statewide program that helps current and former foster youth between the ages of 13 and 24 gain access to a community college education and transition successfully to living independently by providing academic, career and support services. Parking Permits

Parking permits are available in the Business Office, located on the first floor of Godwin Hall.

Student IDs

Student IDs can be obtained by visiting the Center for Student Outreach and Success located in Holton Hall.

Technology Assistance

Testing

MECC requires all students to complete the Virginia Placement Test in reading, writing and math skills prior to registration. The Testing Center is located in the Student Services Office in Holton Hall. Transfer Services

MECC offers assistance to students who wish to transfer to a four-year college or university. To learn more about transfer services, click here.  

Tutoring

The Student Support Services Program is a 100% federally funded program designed to provide academic support services to students who meet eligibility requirements. Additional tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic assistance is available to students not included in the SSS program, free of charge. Students are welcome to visit The Learning Center located on the second floor of Godwin Hall. Veterans

 

Mountain Empire Community College programs are approved for enrollment of qualified veterans, survivors, dependents, and certain reservists.

  • New students or new applicants should contact the Veterans Affairs Officer to apply for benefits.
  • Continuing students (those receiving benefits the previous semester) should contact the Veterans Affairs Officer to be recertified each semester.
  • Returning students (those who previously received benefits but have not attended the College for a semester or more) should contact the Veterans Affairs Officer to restart benefits.
