MECC to Host 2016 Sweet Folk Instruments Gathering

Sweet Folk poster 2016Big Stone Gap, VA – Mountain Empire Community College is pleased to announce the 2016 Gathering of the Sweet Folk Instruments on Saturday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The fourth annual gathering will introduce and promote the autoharp, lap dulcimers, penny whistle, and bodhran (Irish drum) to beginning musicians and extend the knowledge and skills of seasoned musicians.  The goal of the festival is to preserve the traditional performance of the autoharp and lap dulcimer by attracting and teaching youth and adults the culture and musical heritage of the region.  The autoharp and lap dulcimer have a long tradition with musical performance in the Appalachian region.  The autoharp was an instrument featured in early country music and the recording sessions in Bristol.  These two instruments came to our region through German ancestors.

While Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) has long supported musical heritage programs, such as the college’s Home Craft Days Festival and annual Mountain Music School, music faculty saw a need to dedicate a program to sweet folk instruments.  “The festival began in March of 2013 because the music faculty at MECC were concerned with the low participation in performance classes for the autoharp and lap dulcimer,” said Gathering Organizer Michael Gilley.  “Fewer students, especially our youth students, were registering for autoharp and lap or mountain dulcimer classes.  In an effort to promote these instruments, we decided to start this the Sweet Folk Instruments Gathering to promote instruments which might be overlooked.”

Gilley noted that since the event’s inception, the festival has grown in the number of attendees.  “We doubled the number of attendees, particularly younger musicians, over the first three years.  Our goal for this year is to again double our youth participation,” Gilley said.  “We are offering the instrument workshops at half price to youth, ages 6-18 who have participated in the Wise County Jams program and/or MECC’s Mountain Music School.”

Workshop students do not have to own an instrument to attend.  Autoharps, lap dulcimers, and a few bodhrans will be available to loan for the day at no cost.  Penny whistle kits (penny whistle with instructional songbook) will also be available for purchase with advanced online workshop registration.  Instructors for the workshops include Dexter Ramey of Abingdon, VA for beginning autoharp; Anne Lough of Asheville, NC for intermediate and advanced autoharp, Rhodyjane Meadows of Roan Mountain, TN for beginning lap dulcimer; Butch Ross of Chattanooga, TN for intermediate and advanced lap dulcimer; and Lonny Finley of Erwin, TN for penny whistle and bodhran.

Participants may enroll in three-hour workshops scheduled in the morning and afternoon.  Each workshop is $30 per person.  Instrument workshops are limited to 14 students.  Workshop attendees who register for a full day of workshops will receive a free concert ticket.

This year, the public concert will be a lunchtime concert, scheduled from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.  The concert will feature Dexter Ramey and Friends, Anne Lough, Butch Ross, Lonnie Finley, and Rhodyjane Meadows.  The concert is open to the public.  Concert tickets are $10 per adult at the door and $5 in advance if ordered online.  Concert tickets are free for all youth under 18 years of age and for adult students who register for more than one instrument workshop.  Box lunches, turkey wrap or vegetarian wrap, are available for the afternoon concert if purchased in advance.

Pre-registration is required for the instrument workshops, penny whistle kits, reduced concert tickets, and box lunches with application and fees due by Monday, March 14, 2016.

“At EntreEd, our goal is entrepreneurship education for every student. Our vision for this ESTEAM Pitch Series is to encourage the entrepreneurial creativity of students across Appalachia. We know there are great ideas just waiting to be brought forward, and we want this ARC POWER-funded initiative to be an engaging activity that will encourage teachers and students to develop and pitch those ideas in a competitive environment. MECC To Host First-Ever Southwest Virginia Oral Health Summit

Big Stone Gap — Mountain Empire Community College will host the first-ever Southwest Virginia Oral Health Summit, a virtual conference, on September 11 and 18.

The Summit is designed for both community members and oral healthcare providers and will feature continuing education opportunities. Panelists will focus on dental health issues in rural Appalachia, including Virginias Medicaid expansion, links between oral and systemic health, public health trends, a regional opioid epidemic, and the current dental workforce and future recruitment needs.

The conference will be a two-part series, held on Friday, September 11 from 9 a.m. to noon, and again on Friday, September 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. Admission is free, but registration is required. Registration for the event is available at tinyurl.com/OralHealthSummitCE.

Through a partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University, eight hours of Continuing Education credits will be available for $25 per participant. Sponsors for the event include Dentaquest Partnership, Anthem Health-Keepers, Lenowisco Planning District Commission, University of Virginia’s College at Wise Healthy Appalachia Institute, Mountain Empire Community College, and the Mountain Empire Community College Foundation.

For decades, the Appalachian area has faced many dental related stereotypes and challenges. The Lenowisco Planning District, along with UVA-Wise and Mountain Empire Community College, want to highlight success stories in our region. We also hope to create a networking opportunity among community members, fostering a platform for growth and expansion of dental care,” says Dr. Emily Bowen, Dental Assistant Program Director for MECC.

The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Omar Abubaker, DMD. Dr. Abubaker has been on the Faculty at VCU School of Dentistry and VCU Medical Center since 1991, and he currently serves as Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. After the tragic loss of his youngest son to an opioid overdose, Dr. Abubaker became involved with education and research in the field of addiction and pain management.

Dr. Abubaker has appeared with numerous state and national organizations on these topics over the past two years, and quickly rose to the forefront of addiction specialists. Because of his personal connection to the opioid epidemic, he champions reform among prescribers in the dental field, changing the curriculum at medical and dental schools across the country. Dr. Abubaker holds a Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies from the International Program in Addiction Studies which is jointly housed in Virginia Commonwealth University, The University of Adelaide, Australia, and Kings College London, England.

Mary Otto is a Washington Post journalist who began writing about oral health, focusing on social issues, including health care and poverty. She is also the author of Teeth: The Story of Beauty, Inequality, and the Struggle for Oral Health in America, an NPR Best Book of 2017. Otto continues to write about health and social issues as a freelance writer for the Post, as a contributing writer for an online publication for oral health professionals called DrBicuspid.com, and as the editor of Street Sense, a newspaper produced and sold by homeless men and women in Washington, DC.

Emilie Bonovitch, RDH, will speak on recent COVID developments and the impact those new restrictions on dental clinicians. Making a comparison between the historic AIDS crisis and the Bloodborne Pathogen Universal Protocols that were derived from that, the dental industry expects COVID restrictions to reformat the respiratory and infection control standards again. Bonovitch has served as a dental hygienist in the Greater Richmond, Virginia area for the last six years.  She has represented the state of Virginia as a delegate to ADHAs House of Delegates for the last four years. Most recently, she completed a term as President of the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association (VDHA) and is now serving an extended term as Immediate Past President.

The planning committee has worked diligently to prepare an agenda packed with distinguished speakers covering a broad spectrum of topics relevant to our area. Although this event was originally scheduled as an on-campus forum, current circumstances lead us to a transition this to a virtual conference; however, we hope it may work to our advantage to ultimately reach a larger audience, added Bowen.

For more information on the event, please contact Dr. Emily Bowen at 276-523-2400×760 or by email at ebowen@mecc.edu.

Bryn is a talented bassist and long time collaborator with Darrell. She has also toured with Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, and Guy Clark. Jeff Sipe brings a new and exciting interpretation to Darrell’s music. If Birds Could FlyIf Birds Could Fly is a band for people that like real country music. They are not a product of the over produced contemporary country scene. Instead, they represent the kind of soul-driven authentic country music that drives a genre. The lead vocals, provided by Brittany Carter, are in a class all of their own. Their music presents a mixture of classic country sounds and top-of-the-class female lead vocals.

Approximately 600 covered seats will be available for this event. Attendees may also bring lawn chairs if preferred. Attendees are restricted from bringing food and drink to the venue. No firearms are allowed on campus.
