MECC to Offer Course in Life and Teachings of Jesus

Big Stone Gap – Mountain Empire Community College will offer “Religion 216-N1: Life and Teachings of Jesus” this fall. This three-credit course will be offered Monday evenings from 6-8:45 p.m. Student will  study the major themes in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as recorded in the Gospels, and examines the events of his life in light of modern biblical and historical scholarship. Included in our study will be the political, socioeconomic, and religious background at the time of Jesus’ life and ministry. Students will examine the historical Jesus: how Jesus is portrayed in the canonical and non-canonical gospels; key figures in his life; his ministry; the Passion, Resurrection and post-Resurrection.  The coursework will conclude with how the early church viewed Jesus and current thinking about him.
