Mountain Empire Community College receives donor support and grants which support a variety of scholarships, the majority of which are provided through the Mountain Empire Community College Foundation. The MECC Foundation is an institutionally-related 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable foundation whose mission is to foster the growth and progress of Mountain Empire Community College. The MECC Foundation awards scholarships from over 160 funds.
The MECC AIMS Higher Scholarship encourages Virginia-resident high school students in Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton to complete a challenging curriculum, and to pursue higher education. Graduating High School students who meet the requirements of the AIMS Scholars (Virginia Scholars) program will have the opportunity to attend up to two years (72 semester credits) of college without paying any tuition or fees out of pocket. AIMS Scholars, please note that your initial award for the semester is based on enrollment of 12 credit hours. If you take more than 12 credit hours, your award will be adjusted after the last day to add/drop.

2017 – 2018 Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission Scholarship
The purpose of the Virginia Community College Tobacco Scholarship Program is to provide tuition assistance to certain persons who are now or were formerly associated with the tobacco industry. This scholarship program is designed as a “last dollar” program after all other tuition aid has been exhausted. All awards are subject to available funding and initial awards will be made for fall only and then reevaluated for spring based on available funds. Funds for summer enrollment will only be available for students who are enrolled in programs that require summer attendance (Example: Respiratory Care, LPN, Electricity).
Eligibility is limited to residents of the Virginia tobacco region who were either:
- a tobacco grower, producer, or quota owner in Virginia at any time from 1998 to 2004 according to USDA Farm Service Agency records, or the spouse, child (natural or adopted), step-child, grandchild, step-grandchild, son-in-law, daughter in-law, or direct descendent thereof, or
- a former employee of the tobacco processing industry in Virginia as evidenced by pay stubs issued by such employer or W2’s for the appropriate year verifying employment.
The application deadline for consideration is July 31, 2017. Incomplete applications and those not containing the appropriate documentation will not be reviewed.
