295     MUS 295 – TOPICS IN MUSIC: CHORD MELODY FOR JAZZ GUITAR (3 Crs) – Designed to introduce the advancing guitar student to chord structures and resultant melody framing commonly found in jazz music. Students will develop melody lines for several pieces considered standard to the genre by increasing their knowledge of jazz-styled chords and inversions of those chords which complement the melody line with appropriate harmonic content. Students enrolling in this course should be able to change chords with ease, be able to form a few basic barre chords, have a well developed sense of rhythm and timing, and approach their improvement as a guitarist with a willingness to be challenged by a course that will include material and techniques which initially seem difficult to master. Students will also need to be relatively fluent in the use of either sheet music or guitar tablature.
