MECC Announces Class of 2025
Big Stone Gap, VA – Mountain Empire Community College will hold its 52nd commencement ceremony on Friday, May 9th at 6 p.m. at the Big Stone Gap campus.
The Class of 2025 includes 573 graduates, who have earned 943 academic awards, including 1 Associate of Arts degree, 112 Associate of Arts & Sciences degrees, 167 Associate of Applied Science degrees, 8 Associate of Science degrees, 195 Certificates, and 460 Career Studies Certificates.
Graduates participating in the commencement will be welcomed by MECC Local Advisory Board President Michael Abbott. Dr. Kristen Westover, MECC President, will introduce the featured student speakers for the commencement ceremony, which includes graduates Seth Boggs and Ricky Lee Starrett Jr. These student speakers were chosen because of their exceptional academic performance during their college careers.
Seth Boggs, a native of Pound, Virginia, is the son of Jason and Heather Boggs. He is graduating Summa Cum Laude with an Associate of Science degree in Engineering. Seth plans to continue his education at Lincoln Memorial University, where he will pursue a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. His goal is to work at Thompson & Litton, where he has gained valuable experience as an intern for the past three years. Seth hopes to remain in Pound, drawn by its proximity to his family and the scenic beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.
Ricky Lee Starrett Jr. is a resident of Lee County, Virginia, and is the son of Ollie Helton and the late Clark Helton, and Ricky Lee Starrett. Ricky is graduating Cum Laude from the Practical Nursing program. He plans to bridge into the Registered Nursing (RN) program to complete his associate degree while beginning his career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Ricky is married to Mary Starrett, and together they have three children: Jaylin, Nathan, and Arielle.
President Dr. Kristen Westover states, “Graduation reminds us that persistence, purpose, and community create powerful outcomes. Our graduates embody these values, and their success lights the path for those who will follow.”
