Federal stimulus funds will support two AmeriCorps positions
Federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) are providing two full-time, one year membership positions in the AmeriCorps program at Mountain Empire Community College.
These AmeriCorps Recovery members will serve July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. Applications are being accepted now through June 30, 2009 or until positions are filled. Applications will be screened as soon as received.
Program benefits include a living allowance of $14,205 for the year (minus taxes), health insurance, child care assistance if eligible, and training. Individuals filling these positions will also be eligible for a Segal Education Award of $4,725 upon successful completion of service.
AmeriCorps Recovery members will serve full time and operate within the same overall MECC AmeriCorps program priority area of tutoring and literacy, focusing on tutoring/mentoring college students.
One member will serve as a leader for the college's peer-led team learning program for Algebra I students and for other students struggling with math. The second member will serve as a mentor to students who require help with college success skills, developmental courses or other courses, and will encourage them to meet their educational goals. Both members may also be trained to teach components of student success skills courses.
Applicants should have an associate degree or comparable or higher and must have high-level communication skills, both verbal and written. In addition, the applicant for math tutoring position must have high level math skills.
