MECC's PBL students win state awards, will compete in nationals


At the recent state Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) conference in Richmond, Mountain Empire Community College students Elisha Alexander, Brenda Banks, Margaret Ring and Anna Maness placed in the competitions for business and office occupations.

Phi Beta Lambda is the national organization for students in post-secondary schools and colleges enrolled in business, office or teacher education programs. PBL is an integral part of the instructional program and promotes civic and personal responsibility.

Elisha Alexander of Norton took first place in Business Law. She has an Associate of Applied Science degree from MECC in Paralegal Studies and is also receiving an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in Liberal Arts.

Brenda Banks of Big Stone Gap took second place in Management Analysis & Decision Making. Banks is graduating with Associate of Applied Science degrees in Management and Accounting.

Anna Maness of Dryden took third place in Desktop Publishing. Maness is receiving an Associate of Applied Science degree in Administrative Support Technology with a specialization in Medical Office Specialist. Margaret Ring of Coeburn took third place in Business Communication and Desktop Publishing. She is enrolled in the Medical Office Coding and Procedures program.

Alexander and Banks will travel to Atlanta for the national competition in June. Ring and Maness will attend as alternates.


Elisha Alexander, Brenda Banks, Lisa Church and Margaret Ring were among the MECC students attending the Phi Beta Lambda spring conference in Richmond.
