Posted Date: 2/3/2014

Big Stone Gap, VA – Mountain Empire Community College’s Slemp Gallery is now featuring an art exhibition of the works of Misty Stratton located in the Wampler Library, on the second floor of Robb Hall.Polly Really Needed One More Cracker-Misty Stratton

The exhibition, which will run from Jan. 27—Feb. 28, 2014, is titled Strange Bedfellows. “In my art,” says the artist Misty Stratton, “I make references to popular culture and mass media, working often with elements such as repetition to explore ideas of provocation and expectation.” Stratton uses the juxtaposition of ornate wall paper and the subtle lightheartedness of graphite drawings to create a whimsical approach to daily life.

Misty Stratton is originally from Southeastern Kentucky. She obtained an art degree at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, and later earned her Master’s Degree in Painting from the University of Edinburgh’s College of Art in Edinburgh, Scotland. She has taught art courses at both Mountain Empire Community College and at UVA Wise. She is currently in pursuit of a second Master’s Degree in Art History.
