MECC to Offer Plumbing Certification Program in Gate City
Gate City, VA – Mountain Empire Community College will offer a two-year plumber apprentice program at the Scott County Career and Technical Center in Gate City beginning this February.
The course is designed to prepare participants to complete a Level I and Level II NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certification. The Level I course will be offered Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. beginning February 17 and ending on May 28. The Level II course will be held June through September.
Individuals who are unemployed may qualify to participate in the plumbing apprenticeship course through MECC’s On-Ramp program. On-Ramp provides access to higher education and training opportunities, with participants receiving career counseling, tutoring, and other educational assistance. On Ramp students qualifying for financial aid will receive financial assistance for tuition, certification and licensing fees, and books.
To qualify for On Ramp, participants must meet one or more of the following qualifications:
• Have been laid-off or have received a notice of separation notice from your employer
• Eligible for or have exhausted unemployment benefits
• Be self-employed and are now unemployed as a result of general economic conditions
• Be a displaced homemaker or caregiver
Those who do not qualify for the On-Ramp program may also enroll in MECC’s electrician training program. The cost of the course for those who do not qualify for the On-Ramp program is $500.
In order to qualify to take the Virginia Plummer License Exam, students must have a minimum of 240 hours of formal vocational training and four years of practical experience. Once participants complete the MECC Level I and II certification, they will be able seek employment in the field with a NCCER industry recognized certification.
Class size is limited and financial aid is available for those who qualify. A special registration session will be held on Monday, February 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Scott County Career and Technical Center in Gate City.
