Event Description: The purpose of Relay for Life is to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The money will be used to support the ACS's goal of eliminating cancer as a major health issue and to provide services in the community. Event Description:
VT-Engage: Remember - Serve - Learn. As Gandhi said: "Be the change (you) wish to see in the world." Make the hours of unpaid service you do count toward the VT - Engage project. Each person is asked to pledge and serve 10 hours. It can be anything you do, without pay, to help others. Some examples: helping a neighbor; helping a community group with a project; babysitting at no charge to allow parents a rest; taking an elderly person to the store, teaching a Sunday class; helping the Girl or Boys Scouts; visiting residents in a nursing home, etc.

Event Name: Member recruitment for service in MECC AmeriCorps: Apply now
Organization Description: Mountain Empire Community College AmeriCorps Program (MECC AmeriCorps) has the literacy tutoring of children in grades K through 3 as its primary focus. Members serve as tutors in public schools in the counties of Wise, Lee, Scott, Dickenson and the City of Norton. During the summers, placements are also made in local non-profit daycare and preschool centers. Members receive training in tutoring, leadership, active citizenship, career planning, teamwork, diversity, disaster services, First Aid and CPR/AED, and environmental issues. AmeriCorps members are role-models for and promoters of volunteerism and community service. [ AmeriCorps is a national organization. ]
Event: Recruitment of members for 2008-2009 grant year*; Must be a student at MECC or UVA-Wise.

Description
of Service : Members provide 900 hours of service over the period of the grant year. Seven hundred twenty hours are as literacy tutors and 180 hours are a combination of training and community service projects. Members receive a Living Allowance of approx. $213.46 every two weeks (minus taxes), a scholarship of $250 (total $500) in the Fall and in the Spring. Upon completion of successful service, member is eligible for an Education Award of $2,362.50 that is held in trust by the Corporation for National and Community Service for up to 7 years. The Education Award can be used for educational expenses to any accredited college in the nation. Great addition to one's resume.

Organization:
Keep Wise County Beauty (KWCB) services include the Adopt-A-Spot/Street Program, abandoned vehicle removal program and litter hotline — 276/328-1000 to report littering and illegal dumping.
Event Description:
The executive committee of Keep Wise County Beautiful, KWCB, is recruiting members to share in leadership roles to help promote litter control and recycling around the county. Committee membership provides the opportunity for citizens to help plan and organize a wide variety of projects and events, from teaching environmental awareness to being a coordinator for clean up efforts in a specific community or town. On a smaller scale, committee members can opt to help on a single project or event instead.

Description:
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program(RSVP) invites adults age 55 and over to use their life experiences and skills to answer the call of their neighbors in need. RSVP volunteers help solve serious problems in their communties.
