Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count is a multiyear national initiative to help more community college students succeed. The initiative is particularly concerned about student groups that traditionally have faced significant barriers to success, including students of color and low-income students. Achieving the Dream works on multiple fronts, including efforts at community colleges and in research, public engagement and public policy. It emphasizes the use of data to drive change.

MECC faculty and staff have examined the connection between family income and students' performance, and found that its youngest and lowest-income students have the lowest success rates. By focusing on these students, college leaders hope to
- Improve overall student success in developmental math and English;
- Reduce the performance disparity between low-income students and others;
- Increase fall-to-spring and fall-to-fall retention rates.
Faculty for developmental courses will analyze data about programs and will pilot new projects. The college will develop learning communities and incorporate more active learning strategies into the curriculum. A new intrusive, integrated first-year experience will provide enhanced orientation and advising strategies. |
